     Jacob's tragedy starts when his only daughter Dinah is raped by Shechem who is a prince in the land.  He sees her at a town gathering and is captivated by her.  He abducts her and takes her to his house and forces himself on her against her will.  This guy then wants to ask for her hand in marriage because he is so madly in love with her.  The nerve of some people.  This one event causes an all-out war between many Kings and the people they ruled over.  Can you imagine your child getting raped and all your sons going to kill the whole entire town because of it?  Can you imagine multiple areas coming to slaughter you and your family because of this one particular act? 

     Jacob's sons hear that Shechem has defiled their sister and so they come up with a plan.  Shechem sends his Father, Hamor to ask for Dinah's hand in marriage.  They tell him that they will give Dinah to his son if the whole town is circumcised.  Everyone went along with it except for a small group of people who thought it was a bad idea and threatened to go to the neighboring Canaanites and tell them about what was happening in their town recently.  Hamor and Shechem changed their tunes after this and told the people that they were really going to kill Jacob and his family once they were healed from the recent circumcision.  This is overheard by Dinah and she sends word to her family.  Simeon and Levi proceed to slaughter the whole town with the edge of the sword except for two men who escaped.  Those men went to the neighboring town and told them what the Hebrews had done.  That town in turn sent spies to find out if everything was true.  They couldn't believe that only two men had taken down the whole entire town. Jacob is told then to go to Bethel and build an altar.  It was almost as if the Father was saying get ready because it's about to get really bad and you are going to need me.   Seven Kings gathered together with their armies to come against these Hebrews because they were so terrified of them.   In one particular prayer in Jasher 37:14 when the Canaanites gather to make war again with his sons, Jacob hits his knees and makes a powerful prayer that causes the earth to shake from its place and caused the sun to darken.   The Father caused the armies to hear the voice of mighty horses from Jacob's sons.  He made it sound like a great army coming to attack. When these armies went to their counselors to get advice even they advised against attacking the Hebrews.  They reminded them of all the times that their God had rescued them and performed incredible miracles to defeat their enemies. All this persuaded the armies not to attack. 

You know what they say, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger".  Well, this story took that to a whole new level.  Talk about putting you into a permanent prayer position for a while.  What is this story really teaching us though?
